Physician Assistant Job Outlook

Physician Assistant employment is expected to increase 30 percent from 2010 to 2020, much better than the average for all occupations.

With more physicians entering specialty areas of medicine, there will be a growing need for primary healthcare providers, including Physician Assistants. Because Physician Assistants are more cost-effective than physicians, so they are expected to have an expanding role in giving routine care.

General population growth will further spur opportunities for Physician Assistants as more people means more need for healthcare specialists.

In addition, Physician Assistant employment growth will get a boost because the large baby-boom generation is getting older. Aging baby boomers will inherently be susceptible to a variety of conditions and ailments such as heart attack, stroke, and diabetes. Physician Assistants are expected to have an growing role in keeping these people healthy and caring for them when they get ill.

Healthcare providers are also expected to use more Physician Assistants in new ways as states continue to allow Physician Assistants to do more procedures, thus creating still more employment opportunities for the profession.

Good job opportunities are expected. This should be particularly true for Physician Assistants working in medically underserved areas, as well as Physician Assistants focused on primary care.
